ARTIST STATEMENT
My art is an exercise in exploring the flow and push of paint and its response to paper or canvas, and in discovering what surprises me in a subject. I’m particularly drawn to the infinite varieties of light, colors and shapes in our Santa Barbara landscape.

Surprise, discovery, recognition. These are the elements I seek in identifying whether a painting is successful. Surprise that those colors mix and flow in a certain way…discovery of the poetry created by that band of sunlight on a shadowed ridge…recognition that the process of painting has drawn me closer to knowing the world.
