Oil and Acrylic paintings
My approach to painting is improvisational -- building up and tearing down layers of paint, inspired initially by evocative color relationships. I work intuitively and experimentally, often scraping, incising, excavating, erasing, and making gestural markings. I find that a direction for the painting emerges at a certain point. Toward the final layers, the goal is simplification, balance and harmony. The abstraction is intended to be open-ended and non-objective. My hope is that the result captures something of the intangible—perhaps a state of being, the passage of time, memory, loss, mystery and especially the balance between chaos and control.
